Greece debt crisis: Global stock markets slide
55 minutes ago
From the section Business
Stock markets in Europe and Asia have seen big falls after Greece closed its banks and imposed capital controls.
The moves by the Greek authorities came after the European Central Bank decided not to extend emergency funding.
London's FTSE 100 index fell 2% in early trade. Earlier in Asia, Japan's Nikkei index fell nearly 3%.
On the currency markets, the euro had fallen to $1.0953 at one point in Asian trading from $1.1165 on Friday, but it then recovered some ground.
Elsewhere in Europe, Germany's Dax share index and France's Cac 40 were both down more than 3%. The Athens Stock Exchange and Greek banks are closed all week.
Market moves
London's FTSE 100 share index was down 143.72 points, or 2.1%, at 6,609.98, with other European markets seeing even bigger falls.
On the currency markets, the euro saw volatile trading in Asia, falling by 2% at one point, However, it has since recovered some ground, with the euro down 0.6% against the dollar at $1.1095.
The euro has weakened against the pound, with one euro now worth £0.7064, while the pound buys €1.4157.
Oil prices are heading lower. Brent crude oil futures fell more 1.5% to $62.61 a barrel.
Bond yields for Italy, Spain and Portugal - which are considered some of the weaker eurozone economies - rose sharply.
In contrast, German bond yields fell. German bonds are seen as safer investments in times of crisis.
Greece crisis - live coverage
'Out of control'
Greece is due to make a €1.6bn payment to the IMF on Tuesday - the same day that its current bailout expires.
Last week, talks between Greece and the eurozone countries over bailout terms ended without an agreement, and Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras then called for a referendum on the issue to be held on 5 July.
At the weekend, the Greek government confirmed that banks would be closed all week, and imposed capital controls, limiting bank withdrawals to €60 euros (£42) per day.
"Greece's decision to shut banks over the weekend is just the most dramatic element of a crisis that has spiralled out of control," said Chris Beauchamp, senior market analyst at IG.
Greek banks will stay closed until 7 July
Greece's temporary bank closure is sending investors' money into other European markets, which experts say will continue in the short-term, as investors worry about a potential massive default in the country.
"We could very much see a flight to quality," Laura Lambie, senior investment director at Investec Wealth and Investment, told the BBC's Wake Up to Money programme.
"The big question is whether we're going to get contagion from Greece to Portugal to Italy, to some of the weaker economies around Europe."
Despite worries about the deepening crisis in Greece, market watchers say that European markets are equipped to handle the short-term volatility.
"To a certain extent, we do expect markets to react to this with peripheral bond yields probably higher, the euro a little bit lower throughout the week and some strength in the safe havens like the Swiss franc and the British pound," David Stubbs from JP Morgan Asset Management told the BBC's Today programme.
He added that because the economic situation in the eurozone had improved since 2011, the region's economy should be able to weather the storm.
Economic empowerment council (Neec)
The National Economic Empowerment Council (NEEC) has inaugurated the National Entrepreneurship Training Framework (NETF) that is intended to be applied in schools and colleges in a bid to strengthen entrepreneurship spirit among Tanzanians.
It is hoped that the move will make Tanzanian youths and citizens at large more productive in both private and public sectors.
Talking to journalists after the inaugural event over the weekend in Dar es Salaam, the executive secretary, NEEC, Beng’i Issa said the training framework seeks to build a strong base of youths with quality entrepreneurial skills.
“This framework is important for both private and public sectors which have a vital role to play in achieving the National 2025 Vision,” she noted.
She explained that research done by the Institute of Management and Entrepreneurship Development (IMED) and NEEC in 2012 showed that there was no comprehensive framework guiding entrepreneurship teaching in the country.
Explaining further, she said basically Tanzania was lagging behind other countries in the area and it is now high time the nation should embrace such trainings from lower education levels, secondary schools, universities and other groups.
Earlier, inaugurating the framework, the Minister for Education and Vocational Training, Dr Shukuru Kawambwa said the roadmap document will help the nation be competitive and hence achieve sustainable development.
“Education is a priority of the government in the ongoing Big Results Now (BRN),” the minister said in his speech read on his behalf by the director for schools quality assurance in the ministry, Marystela Wasena.
He said that the framework was a very important document in achieving various government goals such as citizens’ empowerment, youth development, education and vocational training, increasing employment and strengthening small and medium enterprises in the country.
He noted that all the goals emphasise a need to have a vibrant entrepreneurial spirit and practice to improve people’s welfare and attaining strong economy.
He explained that his ministry would continue to act as a link among education stakeholders in making sure that it is smoothly implemented.
An official from the International Labour Organisation (ILO), Mkuku Louis said research showed that all countries that prioritise entrepreneurship achieve meaningful progress.
“With abundant resources Tanzania has, entrepreneurship skills among her people, will bring this country to another level,” he said.
He said ILO commends the step taken by the government to have the framework and promised to continue with cooperation.
The preparation of the NETF involved various local and international partners from private and public institutions and entrepreneurs and sponsored by the ILO and Voluntary Service Overseas (VSO).
Zanzibar organised by Wwf and traffic
Zanzibar is set to host the Third Annual East Africa Timber Trade Stakeholders Forum organised by WWF and TRAFFIC beginning today.
The two-day forum will address the growing domestic demand for timber in the region along with the growing intra-regional and inter-regional illegal trade of timber and other forest products flowing across the Mainland - Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda, Zanzibar, Madagascar, Zambia, Mozambique, Malawi and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
According to WWF Head of Terrestrial Programme Geofrey Mwanjela, the forum comes at a time when there is increasing involvement in illegal timber trade across several countries in Africa, leading to losses amounting to billions of dollars each year.
“Illegal trade in timber represents a significant loss in local and national revenues, with estimates for the continent as a whole indicating loses of over
USD17bn per year.
In the eastern Africa region the illegal timber trade is also a driver of environmental degradation. What is needed to reverse these negative impacts is better knowledge of how the illegal trade functions at various scales, improved law enforcement and positive incentives for a legal and sustainable trade,” said Mwanjela.
The forum will further focus on the need for a coordinated inter-regional approach that seeks to forge cooperation and effective communication amongst national forest agencies in Tanzania mainland, Zanzibar, Uganda, Kenya, Mozambique and Madagascar.
The mechanisms will also seek to build relations between national forest agencies and regional bodies such as the Southern Africa Development Commission (SADC) and East African Community (EAC).
Mwanjela noted that the forum will provide opportunities for information and idea exchange on the shifting dynamics of illegal timber trade in Africa.
“This forum will provide an opportunity for government, non-governmental organisations and the private sector to meet and exchange ideas and information on the ever-changing dynamics of illegal and unsustainable timber trade in East Africa,” says Mwanjela.
The Zanzibar Department of Forestry and Non-Renewable Resources Director, Dr Sheha Idrisa Hamdan notes that Zanzibar’s involvement in the forum will serve to contribute towards charting a course leading towards the reduction of illegal trade in timber.
“This year’s forum will set a good roadmap for Zanzibar to be part of the regional discussions and action plan on reducing illegal trade on timber. We look forward to working closely with all the forest authorities and other institutions across the region to curb the illegal trade,” says Dr Sheha Hamdan.
In 2014, the forum drew over 40 participants that reviewed research findings and identified key actions to improve timber trade controls in the sub-region. This year’s forum is set to increase the number of participants to over 50 in order to adequately address several issues that serve to fuel illegal trade in timber and how these can be addressed.
Jakaya kikwete called religious leaders
President Jakaya Kikwete has called upon religious leaders to help the nation uphold the prevailing peace during and after the General Election scheduled for October this year.
He sounded the reminding call in Dar es Salaam while marking the second anniversary on the investiture of Pope Francis’ papacy - the ceremony held at Archbishop Padilla’s residence in the city at the weekend.
The event was organised by the Vatican Ambassador to Tanzania and also attended by Archbishop Polycarp Cardinal Pengo.
According to Kikwete, he took power at the time when the country was well decorated with peace, security and tranquility and as his office tenure ends, he is optimistic, his successor will also inherit the same.
"Every five years, Tanzanians vote in quest for citizenry consent to pick their head. Handover of power in Tanzania has been a matter of peace and we have remained a bright example in Africa to allow a peaceful handover.”
Through this procedure, the president said: “I will end my tenure as a leader and delegate power to the new president. It is my great hope that you will work well with the new leader to maintain peace and social stability as we have partnered … I believe that the Catholic Church will help to ensure that our electoral process and the handover of leadership are peaceful.”
Lauding the Catholic Church for devoted cooperation with the government in providing social services in various developments including health sector,
President Kikwete he said the church and the government are institutions taken care of by humans, sometimes misunderstandings remains obvious. They happen and extinguish - but the relationship between the two is still stronger.
President Kikwete seized the opportunity to bid his farewell to the heads of the Catholic Church, stressing that he is leaving the country in peace and stability. He says the country is now experiencing economic and social transformation which has never been recorded in its history.
"I would also like to emphasise that no human being is perfect. For those who I wronged, you should understand the limits of human potential. We all mistake. I have tried to the best of my ability, and I am sure that my successor will promote the good work that I have done in the last 10 years,” he said.
Adding; “I have devoted much of my time to develop and strengthen relations between the government and the Church.”
However, he explained that the two years of Pope Francis, have brought a world with new hope, a new message of peace, respect for the rule of law, peace and stability.
"His message about the many global challenges, including that of climate, has added a very strong voice on how our world is being managed."
The President’s call came as the National Electoral Commission (NEC) announced in May this year the election schedule whereby campaigns for the General Election will be conducted over the course of 67 days starting from August 22 to October 24, a day before the voting begins.
“The list of candidates vying for Presidential, Parliamentary and Councillorship seats is to be submitted to NEC on August 21 before the campaigns start the following day - on August 22,” reads a media statement signed by NEC Chairman (rtd) Justice Damian Lubuva.
“NEC would like to inform political parties and the citizenry in general that the released election schedule is as per Articles 35 B (1), (3) (a), 37 (10 (a) and 46 (1) of the National Election Act, Chapter 343,” Judge Lubuva detailed.
Lubuva said according to the Election Act, the candidates are to start campaigning immediately after being nominated and the campaign schedule is to run for not less than 60 days and not more than 90 days.
The announcement by NEC comes a day after several political parties opened their doors for eligible cadres who want to vie for presidency, parliamentary and councillorship to collect their forms.
