Portugal have won the European football championship, Euro 2016, beating hosts France 1-0 in extra minutes in the final in Paris.

The winning goal was scored by Eder in 110 minutes, causing great sorrow for the French fans who flooded the stadium Stade de France.

It was great fun for fans of Portugal. This is the first Portuguese to win major championships.

Portugal played with determination and cooperation without their star player Cristiano Ronaldo has come out due to a knee injury in the first half.

Mapigano yamekuwa yakiendelea kwa siku kadha kati ya wanajeshi watiifu kwa Rais Salva Kiir na wanajeshi watiifu kwa Makamu wa Rais Dkt Riek Machar.

Vituo vya Umoja wa Mataifa pamoja na maeneo ya raia pia yameshambuliwa, jambo ambalo Baraza la Usalama la Umoja wa Mataifa linasema huenda likawa uhalifu wa kivita.

Mapigano hayo yamesababisha mashirika ya ndege kusitisha safari za kuingia na kutoka Juba.

Serikali za mataifa mengi ya kigeni zimewahimiza raia wake kuchukua tahadhari. Baadhi, zimeanza kuchukua hatua kuwaondoa maafisa wake nchini humo.

G20 trade ministers discuss protectionism, global recovery in Shanghai

Chinese Commerce Minister Gao Hucheng has welcomed the adoption of the G20 trade growth strategy on Sunday.

Trade Ministers from the group of 20 nations wrapped up a two-day meeting in Shanghai on Sunday.

“This meeting was held in a positive atmosphere, expected results were achieved, and it was a complete success. The meeting became a good training ground at the trade and economic front for the G20 summit which will be held in September this year,” Gao told reporters.

The G20 trade growth strategy adopted after the meeting is aimed at reversing a slowing in global trade, and backed guiding principles for global investment policymaking, the Chinese Commerce Minister said.

“It is fair to say that the agreements reached are the result of China’s efforts, as well as the outcome resulting from the solidarity and the coordination between the G20 countries,” the Chinese commerce minister said.

“The global recovery continues, but it remains uneven and falls short of our ambition for strong, sustainable and balanced growth. Downside risks and vulnerabilities persist,” the ministers said in a joint statement.

On Friday, the WTO said it expects global trade growth to remain sluggish into the 3rd quarter of 2016.

Trade Ministers from the twenty countries also discussed a “worrying” rise in protectionism, Gao said on Sunday.

The joint statement issued at the end of the meeting also referred to the excess capacity in steel and other industries as “a global issue which requires collective responses” seeking to even out the blame that China complains has been unfairly attributed to it.

Chinese trade officials have repeatedly stressed that the country has been the victim of overzealous anti-dumping actions by foreign countries, which fail to take into account Chinese efficiency or its low labor and production costs.

Both US and Chinese policymakers have accused the other’s government of distorting trade to protect domestic interests.

Washington still continues to use “non-market economy methodology” when deciding whether Chinese goods are being “dumped” into the US market at unfairly low prices.

The United States government is expected to alter this status by the end of 2016 to avoid being in violation of US trade obligations.

South African Trade Minister Rob Davies said on Saturday that the G20 trade ministers’ meeting was “taking place at a critical time when the global economy is experiencing global shifts”.

Davies also held a bilateral meeting with his Chinese counterpart Gao Hucheng on Saturday where the two sides discussed China-South Africa trade and investment ties.

BRICS members China and South Africa have expressed grave concerns over the renewed fighting in South Sudan’s capital Juba, amid rising fears that the country is returning to civil war.

“These shooting incidences threaten to draw back the promising gains made through the compromised Peace Agreement and the recently formed Transitional Government of National Unity. President Zuma has called on the two leaders, President Salva Kirr and First Vice President Riek Machar, to provide the required leadership under these difficult circumstances,” the South African Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

The South African government has said it is committed to “provide continued support to the Transitional Government to ensure sustainable peace, stability and development”.

More than 300 people have died in fresh clashes that began on Thursday.

On Monday, Associated Press reported heavy explosions and gunfire in South Sudan’s capital as clashes between government and opposition forces entered the fifth day.

China’s Ministry of Defence said it was “shocked” by the developments in the strife-torn country.

Things began to slide since Thursday when troops loyal to Kiir and soldiers backing former rebel leader Machar first clashed.

A UN peacekeeper from China was killed and six others were injured when the armored vehicle carrying them was hit by a shell during a mission in Juba, capital of South Sudan, according to China’s Ministry of National Defense.

The incident happened on Sunday evening as fighting between government and anti-government forces continued in Juba.

Three were severely injured, said the ministry’s information office, adding that the peacekeepers’ armored vehicle was hit by a shell during a mission to keep guard at a refugee camp.

“The Chinese military is deeply shocked and strongly condemns the attack, and it expresses deep condolences to the victims and their families,” said an official statement.

A South Sudanese Health Ministry source had earlier told Reuters that 272 people, including 33 civilians, were killed on Friday.

The UN Security Council has told rivals President Salva Kiir and Vice-President Riek Machar to rein in their forces and end days of violence that is now raising fears of a slide back to a full-blown conflict after a two-year civil war.

The civil war erupted in December 2013 a few months after Kiir sacked Machar as his deputy.

They had signed a peace deal in August 2015 which is now shattered.

The UNSC, after an emergency meeting, told the two leaders to “do their utmost to control their respective forces, urgently end the fighting and prevent the spread of violence” and commit themselves to their peace deal.

India to extend $92 mn loan for Tanzania water projects

Modi said his government was ready to offer additional financing for other water projects in east Africa’s second-biggest economy [Image: WaterAid]During a state visit by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, India on Sunday extended its full support to the country to meet its development needs and signed five agreements, including one for providing a $92 million credit line in the water resources sector.Modi said he along with President John Pombe Joseph Magufuli “agreed to deepen overall defence and security partnership, especially in the maritime domain.”“Our in-depth discussions on regional and global issues reflected our considerable convergence on issues of common interest and concern,” he said at a joint press interaction after his bilateral meeting with President Magufuli.“India’s cooperation with Tanzania will always be as per your needs and priorities,” Modi said.The two sides signed an agreement under which India would provide a Line of Credit of $ 92 million for rehabilitation and improvement of Zanzibar’s water supply system.The semi-arid country has diminishing groundwater and a lack of safe water access.The Prime Minister said the two countries were also working on a number of other water projects for 17 cities in Tanzania.Modi said his government was ready to offer additional financing for other water projects in east Africa’s second-biggest economy.“India is willing to consider an additional $500 million line of concessional credit,” Modi said at a joint news conference with Magufuli.Tanzania’s water sector has also become the focus of foreign donor support. German state aid agency Giz, for example, a few years ago helped with the setting up of an independent regulator for the water sector. China also has funded clean water projects in Tanzania.Both India and China are trying to expand presence in East Africa’s second-biggest economy.Earlier last year, Tanzania awarded contracts to build new railway lines worth about $9 billion to Chinese firms.Tanzania, in 2014, signed an agreement with China Merchant Holding International (CMHI) to build a new mega port and economic zone at Bagamoyo expected to cost at least $10 billion.China is also financing a $1.2 billion, 532 km natural gas pipeline in Tanzania.
